Since the discovery of its incredible properties, spider silk has been one of the most sought after materials of our generation. The strength of spider silk has been compared to high grade steel, half the strength of Kevlar and extremely light in weight. Although it's at a high demand, it has been proven that spider silk is naturally impossible to mass produce. When things don't work out naturally, what do we do? Yes, we use recombinant DNA. The process of recombinant DNA is known as "piggyBac." In layman's terms, this all means you put a little bit of a into b and get a form of ab. When all this is applied to silkworms, you now get a silkworm which produces a hybrid of worm silk and spider silk. When you think about it...they kind of Weapon X'd these worms.
